John Salminen is a signature member of eleven watercolor societies, including the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Watercolor USA Honor Society, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and Watercolor West. In addition, he has been honored with "Master" status in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and inclusion in the American Watercolor Society's Dolphin Fellowship.
John has won numerous awards in national and international exhibitions, including several major awards from the American Watercolor Society, the Transparents Watercolor Society of America, the New England Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. His work has been exhibited in the National Academy show in New York. He served as Juror of Selection for the American Watercolor Society's 2000 and 2003 exhibitoins and the National Watercolor Society 2003 show. He was a Judge for the 2005 American Watercolor exhibition.
While perhaps best known for his realistic urban landscapes, John has also gained recognition for his mixed media abstract paintings, one of which won first place in the Artist's magazine 2000 art competition in the experimental category judged by Edward Betts.
John's work has been reatured in many national and tinternational publications, including American Artist's Watercolor Magazine, The Artist's Magazine, Watercolor Magic, International Artist, and in several books.
The workshop will begin with pure abstraction and conclude with realism. John has developed a non-threatening approach to abstraction which will encourage representational painters to experiment with a different style and will challenge experienced abstract painters to expand their possibilities in expressing their creative voices. Having completed a successful abstraction, the participants will appy the same design concepts to the development of a realistic piece.
The workshop will include demos, critiques, and lots of individual help. Artists will be encouraged to expand upon their current levels of understanding and learn to use design as a bridge between abstraction and realism.
