2007 National Exhibition: Pat San Soucie, GWS

Reflective Blues
22" x 30"
Strothers Printing Award
Many separate, unrelated textures and motifs in this work had to be brought together in a strong, emphatic way. Working on the piece as a vertical did not resolve any kind of an image or satisfactory presentation of the graphite spiral, the linear brushstroke patterns or the staccato brushstrokes throughout. Finally, a large sheet of absorbent rice paper laid over most of the painting and a strong blue pigment poured through the tissue lent a unifying finish to the design, and, as a horizontal, the statement seemed to evoke a waterscape with blue ripples of reflected light cascading down its surface. That seemed to work.
