Oil painting was the emphasis of Fred's degree in Fine Arts although he did take two semesters of watercolor painting. Watercolors became his primary medium years later while living in Texas and serving with the Air Force. At this time he evolved from abstract paintings to more representational works as he developed new skills with watercolors.
Fred began exhibiting watercolor and acrylic paintings nationally in 1980 while living in North Carolina. He was awarded signature status in the Midwest Watercolor Society, now the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Exhibitions include:
- 1980 National Society of Painters in Caesin & Acrylic, New York, NY
- Midwest Watercolor Society 4th Annual, Manitowoc, WI
- 1981 National Society of Painters in Caesin & Acrylic, New York, NY

Fred and family moved to Georgia in 1984 and continued painting in watercolors and acrylics until a change in jobs required extensive worldwide travel. Although the job expanded his experiences it left little time for painting and exhibiting. The few works he completed were given to friends and relatives. He retired in 2003 and has worked on his skills to begin to exhibit again.
