Having always admired that special look of watercolor, Sharon had vowed that "someday" she would try her hand at painting. Finally, in the Fall of 1996 she began her journey with this intriguing medium by enrolling in a local watercolor class. With some encouragement she entered two paintings in her first show, won two awards, and also sold one of the paintings. This jump-started her art career and helped her overcome her fear of publicly showing her work. Since then she has exhibited in Georgia and Florida, winning many more awards, and earning signature status in the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society and the Georgia Watercolor Society. She also has had several one-artist shows, and enjoys mentoring a very talented 19-year-old aspiring artist with whom she has shared a two-person exhibit.
Her painting style reflects the reality of how she views her world. Just as in day to day life, watercolor painting also presents a series of exciting challenges and little problems to be solved and resolved. She gets a great deal of satisfaction in conquering a color or design "problem". She has also discovered the extreme challenge of painting with India Ink. It is even more unforgiving than watercolor and requires the artist to plan precisely before touching brush to paper, but the wide range of values possible make India Ink an exciting medium.
Her subject matter is as varied as life, but she is especially intrigued by children enjoying their world through simple pleasures; the rigging of fishing boats soaring into the sky and squiggling down the page in a reflection; the freshness of wild or cultivated flowers; and birds soaring, diving, fishing, or just "hanging out" at the beach.
Her goal with her art can best be summed up by altering one word from a quote by John Muir who wrote: "I care to live (substitute "paint") only to entice people to look at nature's loveliness."
