GWS Spring 2007 Newsletter
From the President
I am inspired. Admittedly, the first few months of the year aren't the most exciting ones but a variety of events and my artist friends have inspired me in many ways.
I am inspired by a book, "The Judgement of Paris" by Ross King. It's the historical account of the significant period of time when the Civil War was raging in the US and Impressionism was emerging in France. It's the account of painters who work together, enter competitions, deal with rejection and share ideas. Don't let the size (more than 400 pages) discourage you. It is written like a novel but fact is more interesting than fiction in this case. You will be fascinated by the stories of Edward Manet and Edward Messonier, the most successful artist of his day. And you will relate to the artists of the time. The struggles they face, the challenges, criticism and obstacles are no different than ones we deal with today.
I am inspired to try new techniques. After Judy Greenberg so generously gave her time to demonstrate her unique technique at our first get together, I am ready to apply the gel medium if there is any left at Binders! Sometimes we need a new approach, see the world a little bit differently and a new technique can take us there. I am inspired by Judy's creativity and generosity.
I am inspired by my artist friends who share ideas. That's why I decided to start our new column "Every Artist Has a Story". I hope you relate, enjoy meeting and get inspired by our featured member.
I am inspired by those who entered our National Show. What talented and imaginative artists, all of them. We wish we could display them all!
I am inspired by the hope of spring that will bring our National Show to the charming town of Carrollton. It will prove to be a wonderful show.
And now that I am truly inspired, I think it's time to get to work. It won't be long until it will be time to submit to the Member Exhibit!
I am inspired by the GWS board who so willingly give their time and energy to improve our organization and provide support for fellow artists. I especially want to thank Elizabeth Carr for her hard work as the slide chair. Her work is done and now we can thank Marie Matthews in advance for all the work she has to do as the chair of the National Show. And thanks to all of the other board members and volunteers who step in and help; Kathy Rennell Forbes has collected more than $11,000 in prizes for our National Show, Diana Brehm Williams is organizing our next big show, the Member Exhibition in the fall, our membership chair, Sue Grilli has to keep track of everyone and Karen Braswell tells us how much money we have. I am inspired by Pat Fiorello, Betsy Cozine, Katina Radwanski and everyone else who serves GWS, past and present. I hope we will provide a little inspiration to all of our members.
