GWS Summer 2007 Newsletter
From the President
Do you ever get "stuck"? For me there are times when the muse disappears and I ramble around my studio cleaning the shelves, finding busy work, letting interruptions take me away and finding I've lost an entire day of opportunity. So I've put together a list of ways to get "unstuck." I hope some of the ideas will work for you.
- Go to an exhibit - After I saw the wonderful work in our XXVIII National Show, it was hard to imagine that these artists could ever find themselves stuck in a situation. What a creative and expressive group of paintings. I hope everyone was able to see the show. It was a lot of work and the exhibition took many artists and artist supporters away from their studios. Thanks to all of you who helped make the exhibit, luncheon and workshop one of our finest: Bruce Bobick and his friends from Carrollton, Penny Lewis and her staff at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center, Marie Matthews and the board of GWS, and our member volunteers and their spouses especially Jean and Bud Jones and to everyone else that I might not have mentioned.
- Take a workshop - I wish everyone could have experienced the Skip Lawrence workshop in Carrollton. Believe me, he will get anyone "unstuck" and if you ever get a chance to attend one his workshops, be sure to do it. He crams what seems like an entire MBA program into a week and he does it with humor. Everyone in the workshop had a great time and came out inspired.
- Learn from others - Another way to get the juices flowing is to see what others are doing. A great opportunity will be at our next demonstration meeting on June 30 at Binders from 1-3 where Marie Matthews is going to be demonstrating. Marie recently won honors at the Southern Watercolor Society Exhibition and is well known for her figurative work. And take a look in the newsletter at what some of our other members are up to. It is definitely inspiring.
- Spend time with other artists - Thanks to all who will be on the GWS board in 2007-08. It is a pleasure and a great experience to work with so many creative and giving people. It was such a good experience that I've decided to remain on the board as the entry chair for the XXIX National Show in 2008. Please consider being a volunteer at some time during your membership. You will meet the most creative people with the best ideas and make friends that will last a lifetime.
- Enter competitions - Competitions give an artist a goal to work toward. With the addition of digital entries the process has become more streamlined. Remember the GWS Member Exhibit is approaching. Everyone should have his or her prospectus by now.
- Make time for your art - This is my last month as president and I would like to say "thank you" for the opportunity. The year has been wonderful and has been filled with challenges and rewards. Now I will get back to the studio cleaning. No, wait! The muse has returned!
